The Chicago Bulls have taken a significant step in their offseason strategy. After making several coaching changes and trading Alex Caruso to the Oklahoma City Thunder, they have now extended a qualifying offer to Patrick Williams ahead of the 2024 draft.

    Contract Details

Patrick Williams has been extended a qualifying offer that will pay him $13 million for the 2024-25 season, making him a restricted free agent.

    Williams’ Commitment to the Bulls

Williams has expressed his desire to remain with the Bulls, emphasizing his commitment to building a strong culture and team. He considers himself a cornerstone of the team but acknowledges the business nature of the NBA.

    Performance and Challenges

Drafted fourth overall in 2020, Williams averaged 10.0 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.5 assists last season, with a 39.9% three-point shooting rate. Despite showing solid defense, injuries have plagued his career, affecting his consistency.

Williams has been critical of his own performance, noting his inconsistency and missed opportunities to make plays, despite having the skills and chances.

    Strategic Move for the Bulls

Extending the qualifying offer allows the Bulls to retain control over Williams’ rights and potentially gain draft capital if he signs with another team. Teams like the Thunder, Hornets, and Raptors have shown interest in him.

    Contract Negotiations

Williams previously turned down a four-year, $64 million contract offer from the Bulls, reportedly seeking up to $90 million over four years. Rival executives have been monitoring his availability, especially after he did not sign an extension with Chicago.

Free agent negotiations can officially begin on June 30 at 6 p.m. ET.
