NBA REPORT- Chicago Bulls Announce new Signings as NBA Moratorium Lifts

The NBA’s moratorium on free agent signings ended Saturday, allowing previously reported moves to become officially finalized. The Chicago Bulls announced the re-signings of Patrick Williams and Adama Sanogo, the latter on a two-way contract. Meanwhile, high-profile moves involving DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine remain unresolved for now.

    Key Signings

    Patrick Williams and Adama Sanogo

The Bulls have officially re-signed forward Patrick Williams and center Adama Sanogo. Williams, who turns 23 in August, was the Bulls’ first significant draft pick under the current management, taken fourth overall in the 2020 NBA Draft. He has been signed to a five-year deal averaging $18 million per year. Management is betting on Williams to realize his potential as a versatile “3-and-D” wing with significant athleticism.

Sanogo, on the other hand, returns on a two-way contract. His re-signing adds depth to the Bulls’ roster as they continue to rebuild with a focus on youth.

    DeMar DeRozan’s Future

DeMar DeRozan is negotiating a sign-and-trade deal involving the Bulls, Sacramento Kings, and a third team, likely the San Antonio Spurs. DeRozan visited Kings officials on Saturday. The proposed deal is expected to be worth around $20 million annually, totaling approximately $60 million over three years.

The Bulls, who are $11 to $13 million under the luxury tax threshold depending on the fate of Onuralp Bitim’s non-guaranteed contract, are keen to avoid taking on additional salary that would push them over the limit. Therefore, a third team is necessary to facilitate the transaction, with draft capital likely being exchanged to assist the Kings in acquiring DeRozan.

    Roster Adjustments and Youth Movement

Throughout much of last season, the Bulls and DeRozan anticipated his return, with internal discussions centering on a two-year deal at a higher annual salary than the $28.6 million he earned last season. However, management’s desire to overhaul the roster, coupled with a challenging trade market for Zach LaVine, led to a trade with the Oklahoma City Thunder, sending Alex Caruso in exchange for Josh Giddey.

Williams, part of the youth movement, is expected to take on a more prominent role with DeRozan’s likely departure. Despite the impending move, DeRozan has been a strong advocate for Williams, and their close relationship has been significant for the young forward’s development.

    Upcoming Moves

As of Saturday evening, the Bulls have not yet officially announced the signing of free agent center Jalen Smith or the veteran forward Torrey Craig exercising his player option. However, these moves are expected to be confirmed soon.

    Summer League Roster

The Bulls’ summer league roster is highlighted by recent draft picks Matas Buzelis and Julian Phillips. The team is looking forward to seeing how these young players perform and develop in the upcoming summer league games.

The Chicago Bulls are undergoing significant changes, emphasizing a youth movement while making strategic signings and trades. The developments in free agency and roster adjustments signal a new direction for the team as they prepare for the upcoming season.
