Jack Beckman, who has taken over driving duties for NHRA legend John Force this season, recently opened up about the health issues that led to his sudden withdrawal from the NHRA Texas Fall Nationals. Beckman, who was poised to race after securing the No. 3 qualifying spot, experienced unexpected vertigo-like symptoms that forced him to reconsider competing in the 39th edition of the event, held at the Texas Motorplex.
Beckman’s health scare saw him admitted to the hospital for observation overnight. Following his release, he took to social media to provide an update and reassure his fans. In a heartfelt message, he expressed gratitude to his supporters and his John Force Racing (JFR) teammates, writing:
“I want to thank all of the fans and my amazing JFR teammates and crew for making a horrible situation tolerable. Vertigo is nothing to take lightly, and a night in the hospital stunk, but Christine and I are on a plane getting ready to head home, put this behind me, and focus on Vegas…and our next win!”
The 2012 NHRA Funny Car world champion and 2003 Super Comp world champion, Beckman has a stellar track record in the sport. With 35 national event wins, including 33 in the highly competitive Funny Car category, he’s well-known for his skill behind the wheel. Beckman made his return to NHRA racing in 2024, stepping in for John Force after the drag racing icon’s devastating crash earlier in the season.
John Force, a 16-time NHRA Funny Car champion, sustained a traumatic brain injury following a crash during the NHRA Virginia Nationals, which sent shockwaves through the drag racing community. His crash occurred after an engine explosion propelled his car into a concrete barrier at over 300 mph. As of the latest update in July, Force has been undergoing outpatient rehabilitation to address lingering cognitive and memory issues. His recovery is being closely monitored, with a focus on speech therapy and physical rehabilitation to aid his healing.
Beckman’s decision to withdraw from the Texas Fall Nationals was made in consultation with NHRA medical professionals. According to Bob McAleer, the spokesperson for John Force Racing, Beckman seemed fine when he left the track on Saturday night, but by Sunday morning, his symptoms had worsened. McAleer stated:
“Jack was fine when he left the track (Saturday night), but when he woke up this morning, he had vertigo-like symptoms that were not quickly resolved. On the advice of NHRA medical professionals, he reluctantly has withdrawn from competition this weekend.”
While Beckman’s withdrawal was a disappointment for fans, many have praised his transparency and responsible approach to prioritizing his health. The driver remains optimistic about his future, and his sights are set on recovering in time for the upcoming race in Las Vegas, where he hopes to return to form and continue his successful season.
