Kyle Larson Hints at 2025 Indy 500 Return After NASCAR Brickyard Victory

Kyle Larson made headlines with his performance at the 2024 Indianapolis 500, sparking speculation about a possible return in 2025. Larson, known for his versatility and speed across different racing formats, hinted at a future Indy 500 run following his recent win at the Brickyard 400.

Larson, often compared to Formula 1’s Max Verstappen for his natural talent and adaptability, has predominantly focused on NASCAR throughout his career. However, in 2024, he attempted the ambitious “double,” which involves racing in the Indianapolis 500 and the NASCAR Coca-Cola 600 on the same day. Unfortunately, weather complications disrupted his plans, but his impressive performance at the Brickyard 400 suggests he isn’t done with Indy yet.

The last Sunday in May, known as Motorsport Christmas, features three major races: Formula 1’s Monaco Grand Prix, the Indianapolis 500, and NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Competing in any one of these races is a significant achievement, but Larson aimed to tackle both the Indy 500 and the Coca-Cola 600.

Larson’s attempt at the “double” was thwarted by bad weather. Rain delays at the Indianapolis 500 forced him to stay at the track longer than planned. Despite the delays, he completed the race and quickly flew to Charlotte, only to find the Coca-Cola 600 red-flagged due to rain. The race was eventually canceled, preventing Larson from even starting.

The aftermath of the rainy race day led to controversy. NASCAR took several days to grant Larson the waiver needed to remain eligible for the championship, as drivers must compete in every Cup Series race to qualify.

The delay in granting the waiver raised questions about NASCAR’s stance on drivers attempting the “double.”

Larson’s victory at the Brickyard 400, NASCAR’s Cup Series event at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval, marked a significant comeback. The race, returning to the oval after several seasons as a road course event, saw Larson make a decisive pit stop that positioned him to win during overtime. Crossing the finish line first, Larson celebrated on the iconic yard of bricks.

“It’s such a prestigious place and such hallowed ground,” Larson said after his victory. “I love you, Indiana fans, and I know you love me, too. How about we come back next May and try to kiss the bricks in the Indy car?”

Larson’s statement about returning to the Indy 500 brought cheers from the crowd. While he didn’t provide an official confirmation, he indicated ongoing discussions about a 2025 Indy 500 entry. Despite the challenges of his 2024 attempt, Larson’s win at the Brickyard 400 and his passion for the sport suggest he’s not done with Indy yet.

The Brickyard 400 holds a special place in NASCAR history, being the site where the tradition of “kissing the bricks” began. Larson’s victory there likely provided a morale boost after his difficulties in May, fueling speculation and excitement about his potential return to the Indianapolis 500 next year.
