Edmonton Oilers Forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins Under the Weather, but Set for Game 7
SUNRISE, FLA. — Despite the sunny and hot weather on Sunday, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was feeling under the weather.
The longest-serving Edmonton Oiler missed the team practice at Amerant Arena, staying back at the team hotel. In his absence, Evander Kane took his spot on the top line with Connor McDavid and Zach Hyman during the short practice session before Monday night’s crucial Game 7 against the Florida Panthers.
Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch reassured fans not to worry about Nugent-Hopkins’ condition, confirming that he will play.
“He’ll be out there,” said Knoblauch, emphasizing Nugent-Hopkins’ commitment as the Oilers stand on the brink of their first Stanley Cup in 34 years. “He would be playing Monday even if he was strapped to an IV pole.”
“Monday marks exactly 13 years since he was drafted (2011, first overall),” Knoblauch added. “He’s been with the organization for a very long time. The players have immense respect for him because he’s experienced it all—many down years, missing the playoffs, and playoff disappointments.”
“Now, we have the chance to win the final game of the season. Everyone’s very happy for him,” Knoblauch continued.
“While Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl are often seen as the central figures of our team, Ryan is crucial as well. He plays a significant role in our penalty kill, power play, and usually on our top or second line.”
Knoblauch also mentioned that Evander Kane, who has missed the last four games due to injury, might play. However, given the team’s three consecutive wins, Knoblauch hinted at maintaining the current successful lineup.
