Orlando, Florida — 49ers general manager John Lynch believes that Dre Greenlaw could be placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list to begin the 2024 season.
Speaking to local Bay Area media on Monday while at the NFL Annual Meeting in Orlando, Lynch said that while Greenlaw’s surgery went well, the linebacker will probably miss a few games at the start of the season because of his February Achilles injury.
It takes time to overcome an Achilles, Lynch stated on Monday. “Dre will let you know that he will return in Week 1, and I don’t think anything is impossible for him, but we need to be cautious.” Perhaps a PUP circumstance.
In case Greenlaw isn’t ready for Week 1, the 49ers signed linebacker De’Vondre Campbell to a one-year deal as a backup. Along with Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles, Curtis Robinson, and Ezekiel Turner, they also inked one-year contracts with them.

In addition, the team has a stand-in player on the roster in case safety Talanoa Hufanga’s ACL injury does not heal completely by Week 1. With a serious knee injury, nothing is guaranteed, but the USC graduate should be back this season after suffering the injury in Week 11 of the 2023 campaign.
