The offensive line for the Patriots is almost complete.
The Patriots are appointing Taylor Embree as their new running backs coach, per NFL on CBS. He will take over for Vinnie Sunseri, who moved from New England to the University of Washington to coach defensive backs.
Embree, 35, is a rookie assistant coach connected to the West Coach offensive scheme and has NFL experience. He was the running backs coach for the New York Jets for the previous three seasons. At the conclusion of the 2023 campaign, Embree was let go by head coach Robert Salah and the Jets.
Embree was a key player in a Jets running back room that witnessed Breece Hall have his greatest season last year. Along with five touchdowns, the second-year player ran for a career-high 994 yards.
Embree, a UCLA wide receiver, spent a brief time in the 2012 offseason with the Los Angeles Chargers. Later that year, he began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at UNLV, then UCLA (2013–14). Embree became a member of Andy Reid’s Kansas City Chiefs defence assistant staff in 2016.
Embree returned to his offensive roots in 2017 when he became an offensive quality control coach for the 49ers under Kyle Shanahan. After three seasons on Shanahan’s staff, he moved on to become the tight ends coach for
Embree moved to New York in 2021 to work with Salah, who was a coach for the 49ers as well. Nathaniel Hackett was brought on as New York’s new offensive coordinator during the previous offseason. When Hackett was recruited, Embree was one of Salah’s “untouchables,” according to Connor Hughes of SNY TV.
Among Mayo’s seven recent additions to his offensive coaching staff is Embree. These include offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, quarterbacks coach T.C. McCartney, offensive line coach Scott Peters, offensive assistant Ben McAdoo, assistant receivers coach Tiquan Underwood, and assistant offensive line coach Robert Kugler.
