This season, the 49ers had an impressive seven players named to the 2023 NFL AP All-Pro first and second teams.
Surprisingly, star quarterback Brock Purdy is not among them.
First-team selections included running back Christian McCaffrey, fullback Kyle Juszczyk, tight end George Kittle, left lineman Trent Williams, and linebacker Fred Warner, while wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and cornerback Charvarius Ward were named to the second team.
McCaffrey, Warner, and Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill were the only three players selected unanimously to the first team.
Purdy garnered All-Pro votes, as did wide receiver Deebo Samuel, defensive end Nick Bosa, defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, linebacker Dre Greenlaw, safety Tashaun Gipson, punter Mitch Wishnowsky, and special teams safety George Odum.
San Francisco has seven All-Pro selections, the second highest among NFL teams. Dallas had a league-high nine players chosen.
Lamar Jackson, the Baltimore Ravens’ quarterback and frontrunner for the 2023 NFL MVP award, was named to the All-Pro first team, while Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott was named to the second team.
Purdy was considered MVP throughout the season and was even the favourite before his awful four-interception performance in the 49ers’ Week 16 defeat to the Ravens.
The 24-year-old is still likely to be considered for the award, although Jackson has since won it, while Prescott ended near the top of most statistical categories and led the league with 36 touchdown passes.
Unfortunately for Purdy, the 50 media members who voted on the AP All-Pro teams had tough choices to make, and while Purdy had an MVP-caliber season in 2023, it’s impossible to argue with Jackson and Prescott.
San Francisco will have to settle for a very impressive seven All-Pro selections.
