During a conference call today, Kyle Shanahan disclosed that Thomas was going into the game with a fractured hand. Despite having every excuse to stay out of the game, he chose to participate with a cast on.
But now that his hand is injured, Thomas will have surgery this week. Thus, he won’t be able to play against the Rams in the season finale. The good news is that other than that game, Thomas is not anticipated to miss anything.
“Only this week, Shanahan declared. “I believe they even informed me prior to the Washington game that he would have surgery on Tuesday and might still be able to play on Sunday. Therefore, I doubt that we would take a chance like that right now given the circumstances, but that gives me a good sense of confidence that he will be available for our next game.
Thomas is having surgery. History keeps demonstrating how important it was for the 49ers to secure the top seed in the NFC this past week. Because of that, the 49ers in Week 18 have nothing to play for. Players can take care of that if they are injured or need emergency surgery. Essentially, the 49ers get a two-week break, whichis very important to them right now.
It hurt the 49ers to lose Thomas for the entire season. His contribution to the defense’s better coverage since the bye week has been significant. Given Thomas’s absence, I expect Darrell Luter Jr. or Jason Verrett to contribute to this game.
