After just over a year at Old Trafford, Casemiro’s long-term future at Manchester United has been called into question, with ex-Red Devils striker Dimitar Berbatov naming Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich as his “perfect” replacement. The Brazilian has been out with an ankle injury for the past few weeks, so youngster Kobbie Mainoo has filled in.
One of Manchester United’s rumoured areas to improve in January is midfield, along with a new centre-back and experienced striker, fuelling speculation that Casemiro might leave Erik ten Hag’s side. Sir Jim Ratcliffe, United’s new minority owner, has already questioned the decision to spend £60 million for the former Real Madrid star last year, and he was recently considered as part of a potential move to Saudi Arabia.
Berbatov is curious about Ratcliffe’s intentions in the upcoming transfer window and believes Kimmich would be a “perfect” midfield acquisition. The 28-year-old has been linked with a transfer away from Bayern following allegations that he and head coach Thomas Tuchel had a spat, and the Bulgarian has pushed United to sign Kimmich this summer.
“Going forward with the takeover, I wonder how brave Manchester United will be in the transfer market,” Berbatov told Betfair in an interview. “Joshua Kimmich is being linked, but he is such a key player for Bayern Munich.” Is it possible that he will leave Bayern and join United in the January transfer window? That is not something I believe will happen.
“Perhaps we can discuss this transfer in the summer, but he is highly regarded at his current club.” With Casemiro’s injuries and form, United may hunt for a successor.
“Let’s not forget about Scott McTominay, he’s there and playing well, but if Casemiro can’t be counted on to play because of his age and injuries, then you have to buy someone to replace him.” Kimmich is a natural match for that role, but does he want to leave Bayern? That’s going to be a difficult choice.”
