Shocking!!!Analyst Criticizes Mavericks’ Recent Free Agent Signing

The Dallas Mavericks have made a significant move by signing Klay Thompson, aiming to bolster their shooting capabilities after struggling with three-point shots in the NBA Finals. Acquiring Thompson on a three-year, $50 million deal seemed like a reasonable investment considering his reputation as one of the greatest shooters in basketball history.

    Contrasting Opinions on the Signing

However, not everyone shares this positive outlook. Ben Maller, speaking on FOX Sports Radio, criticized the Mavericks and Thompson, declaring that Thompson is “cooked and done” and that Dallas overpaid for a player who no longer has much to offer. Maller argued that injuries have severely impacted Thompson’s game. While he can still shoot, Maller noted that Thompson had only two dunks last season and struggles to drive to the rim, a key component of a versatile offensive player.

    Thompson’s Recent Performance

Despite these criticisms, it’s important to highlight Thompson’s recent accomplishments. Following the All-Star break, he was second only to Donte DiVincenzo in the number of three-pointers made, shooting an impressive 42% from beyond the arc. Although he may never regain his former defensive prowess—a quality that would have been beneficial for Jason Kidd’s team—the Mavericks do not need him to be a primary scorer.

    Financial Perspective and Team Needs

With the NBA salary cap continuing to rise, the $50 million contract over three years is relatively modest by current standards. The Mavericks needed a reliable shooter to complement their offense, and few players in the history of the game have been as proficient as Klay Thompson in this regard. Despite his reduced ability to drive to the basket, Thompson’s exceptional shooting skills remain invaluable.

In summary, while there are differing opinions about the Mavericks’ decision to sign Klay Thompson, his proven shooting ability addresses a critical need for the team. The financial terms of the deal align with the rising salary cap, making it a calculated risk that could pay off significantly for Dallas.
