The Tennessee Titans acquired cornerback L’Jarius Sneed, who was franchise-tagged by the Kansas City Chiefs, late on Friday night.
Let’s examine every detail of the trade in detail.
The selections from the seventh round
According to early reports, Sneed would be traded by the Chiefs in exchange for two 2024 seventh-round picks and the Titans’ 2025 third-round selection. Late on Friday night, Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reported that Tennessee would trade its third and earliest seventh-round pick (221) to Kansas City for the team’s lone seventh-round pick (252).
Instead of having the sixth-to-last pick in the seventh round, the Chiefs will now hold the first pick. That is 31 spots—nearly an entire round—earlier.
What is meant by that?
General manager of Kansas City Brett Veach selected cornerback Nic Jones in the seventh round (250) in the 2023 draft. He selected safety Nazeeh Johnson (259), running back Isiah Pacheco (251), and cornerback Jaylen Watson (243) in the seventh round of 2022. He selected cornerback Thakarius “BoPete” Keyes (237) in 2020. He chose guard Nick Allegretti (216) in 2019.
Even though they have both shown promise, it is still too early to tell if the choices made for Jones and Johnson will be successful. None the less, Allegretti, Watson, and Pacheco were all hits. With the exception of Allegretti, all of these six players were selected after the 221st pick, with Keyes being the only one who went undrafted.
