The Los Angeles Chargers made an unexpected decision on Friday by removing a team captain only one day before their game against the Buffalo Bills. The Chargers have released defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day, according to NFL insider Ari Meirov.
Last Thursday, Joseph-Day got two tackles in his team’s humiliating 63-21 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. As a result of his release, he will be sent to waivers.

Day, a former sixth-round choice in the 2018 NFL Draft, agreed to terms with the Los Angeles Chargers on a three-year, $24 million contract in 2022. During his first season with the AFC West club, he recorded 56 tackles, nine TFLs, six QB hits, an interception, and a forced fumble. In the season finale, he intercepted Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson. Before being released, Joseph-Day appeared in all 14 games this season. During the season, he had 31 tackles, three TFLs, and 11 QB hits.
Joseph-Day started his career with the Los Angeles Rams, where he spent three seasons under head coach Sean McVay. As a rookie, he had 44 tackles, including two sacks. In 2020, he had 55 tackles before recording a career-high three sacks in 2021. Sebastian Joseph-Day won the Super Bowl with the Los Angeles Rams that year.

The Los Angeles Chargers are coming off a 63-21 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, in which they surrendered the most points in franchise history. The aftermath was severe, with both head coach Brandon Staley and general manager Tom Telesco fired. Staley was with the team for only two seasons, going 24-24 and failing to win a playoff game despite the team lavishing large sums on defence. With franchise quarterback Justin Herbert at the helm, he too struggled to instill a winning culture.
In four NFL seasons, Herbert has thrown 114 touchdowns and 42 interceptions. Herbert was named AP Offensive Rookie of the Year, garnered MVP votes, and was named to the Pro Bowl, but the Chargers have only one double-digit winning season.
