According to sources, Kalvin Phillips needs assurances that he would be handed first-team football before any January loan move. Since joining Manchester City for nearly £50 million last year, the England international has been deprived of playing time.
Newcastle United were one among the clubs interested in Phillips at the time, and it is understood that they are keeping a careful eye on his position. The only games he has started for City this season have been the Carabao Cup trip to St James’ Park in September and last week’s Champions League dead rubber.
When pressed last week, Pep Guardiola left the door open for a future leave and confessed he “struggles” to imagine Phillips on his team. The remarks were interpreted as acceptance of the 28-year-old’s departure next month.
“I don’t know what’s going to happen (to Phillips),” he told reporters. “I’m sorry for the decision I made for him. That’s something I’ve mentioned numerous times. He did not deserve what happened to him, and I am deeply sorry.
“The only thing I can say about him is that I am looking for people with good personalities and characters, and he is an excellent example.” And then I’m supposed to give him something, which I didn’t do. It’s just that I envision some things and the team and things – and I can’t seem to see him.”
According to the Mirror, Phillips is now seeking confirmation that he will play regularly before considering a move. Given Newcastle’s recent injury issue, the midfielder would very probably have been called upon if he had remained fit.
Juventus, meanwhile, is without Paul Pogba and Nicolo Fagioli due to long-term sanctions. Everton and West Ham United are two more Premier League clubs interested in Phillips.
