The hate goes on as Kyle Larson is the latest driver to question NASCAR for giving the ” most popular driver ” award to Chase Elliott: “this is just as everyone says,it’s rigged”

Kyle Larson Sparks Controversy Over NASCAR’s “Most Popular Driver” Award Given to Chase Elliott

NASCAR has once again found itself embroiled in controversy as Kyle Larson, the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion, openly criticized the organization for awarding the “Most Popular Driver” title to Chase Elliott. In an unfiltered statement, Larson remarked, “This is just as everyone says, it’s rigged,” fueling speculation and debate among fans and insiders about the award’s credibility.

The “Most Popular Driver” award has long been a staple of NASCAR, often regarded as a fan-driven accolade that reflects the sport’s most beloved figure. Chase Elliott, son of NASCAR legend Bill Elliott, has dominated the award since Dale Earnhardt Jr. retired in 2017. For some, Elliott’s consistent wins in the popularity contest seem natural, given his lineage and consistent performance. However, detractors like Larson argue that the process lacks transparency and fairness.

Larson’s comments came during a post-race interview, where he expressed frustration over what he perceives as favoritism in NASCAR’s fan-voted award system. While he didn’t mince words, his criticism appeared to reflect a broader sentiment among drivers who feel overshadowed by Elliott’s seemingly perennial dominance in the popularity stakes.

“Chase is a great driver, no doubt, but does being ‘Most Popular’ always have to come down to legacy?” Larson reportedly questioned. “It’s time we have a real conversation about how this award is decided.”

As expected, Larson’s remarks ignited a storm of debate on social media. Elliott’s fanbase, one of the largest and most vocal in NASCAR, was quick to defend him, emphasizing his consistent performances and connection with fans.

One Elliott supporter tweeted: “Kyle Larson is a phenomenal driver, but maybe he should focus on winning races instead of questioning Chase’s popularity. Fans choose who they love, and that’s that.”

On the other hand, Larson’s supporters backed his criticism, calling for a review of the voting process. “It’s a popularity contest, but how is it fair if it’s always the same person?” one fan posted. “NASCAR should introduce more checks to ensure the award isn’t just a dynasty thing.”

NASCAR has yet to issue a formal response to Larson’s comments, but the debate raises questions about the integrity of fan-voted awards in a sport where personal connections and legacy often outweigh current performance.

Historically, NASCAR has left the award’s fate in the hands of fans, with online voting determining the winner. However, as more drivers like Larson question the process, there may be pressure on the organization to implement reforms to ensure greater fairness and inclusivity.

The public friction between Larson and Elliott is unlikely to fade anytime soon. Both are top-tier drivers, with Elliott representing NASCAR’s old guard of fan-favorite family names and Larson symbolizing the new wave of undeniable talent. This clash of narratives is reflective of the broader evolution within NASCAR itself, as it seeks to balance tradition with innovation.

As the offseason approaches, NASCAR will need to address the growing controversy surrounding the “Most Popular Driver” award. Whether that means adjusting the voting process, adding transparency measures, or simply weathering the storm, one thing is clear: the conversation sparked by Kyle Larson won’t be silenced easily.

In the meantime, fans can only wait to see if Larson’s bold comments inspire others to speak out—or if the award’s legacy remains unshaken.
