“talk about NASCAR being partial! Chase Elliott is popular but he sure ain’t the most popular and we all know this..” Martin Truex Jr drops hot take on Chase winning Most popular award

The annual NASCAR Awards Banquet took an unexpected turn this year as Martin Truex Jr., the 2017 Cup Series Champion, boldly criticized the fan-voted Most Popular Driver award following Chase Elliott’s seventh consecutive win. Truex’s comments have ignited a heated debate within the NASCAR community about the legitimacy of the award and the transparency of the voting process.

Speaking candidly to the media after the ceremony, Truex didn’t mince words. “Talk about NASCAR being partial! Chase Elliott is popular, but he sure ain’t the most popular, and we all know this,” he remarked.

The Most Popular Driver award, overseen by the National Motorsports Press Association (NMPA) and determined through fan votes, has long been a staple of NASCAR’s postseason accolades. However, its credibility is now under scrutiny.

Truex hinted at potential biases in the award’s process, suggesting that NASCAR might be favoring certain drivers for promotional purposes. “It feels more like a marketing strategy than a genuine reflection of the fans’ choice,” he added.

Since 1991, the Most Popular Driver award has been largely monopolized by two families: the Earnhardts and the Elliotts. Dale Earnhardt Jr. held the title for 15 consecutive years before retiring in 2017, paving the way for Chase Elliott to dominate since 2018.

However, critics argue that Elliott’s popularity may be overstated. While he has a massive fan base, detractors claim his quieter demeanor and lack of consistent headline-worthy performances don’t align with the title of “most popular.”

Truex’s statements have found support among some fans, who have voiced similar frustrations over the years. Social media erupted following Elliott’s win, with comments like:

    • “NASCAR has their favorites, and they’re not even hiding it anymore.”
    • “Truex is right! Chase might be popular, but the voting is rigged. There are drivers who deserve it more.”
    • “This award has become a joke. It’s all about who NASCAR wants to push, not who fans really love.”

When asked about Truex’s comments, Chase Elliott took the high road. “Everyone is entitled to their opinion,” Elliott said. “I’m just grateful for the fans who continue to support me year after year. It means a lot to me and my team.”

Elliott also addressed the larger debate surrounding the award. “This is about the fans, and I trust that the process reflects their voices,” he remarked.

Truex’s critique raises broader questions about the role of fan engagement and transparency in NASCAR. If the Most Popular Driver award is seen as biased or predetermined, it risks alienating the very fans it’s meant to honor.

“Fans want to feel heard,” Truex explained. “If they think the system is unfair, it could damage the trust they have in the sport.”

As NASCAR heads into the 2025 season, the controversy surrounding Elliott’s Most Popular Driver streak shows no signs of cooling down. Truex’s bold take has amplified calls for greater transparency in the voting process and perhaps even a reevaluation of how the award is decided.

Whether you’re Team Elliott or agree with Truex, one thing is clear: the debate has sparked a conversation about fairness, popularity, and the evolving nature of NASCAR fandom.
