Casey Stoner Critiques Current MotoGP Technology, Advocates for Safety Over Speed

Two-time MotoGP World Champion Casey Stoner has never been one to shy away from speaking his mind about the sport he loves. Recently, the Australian rider shared strong opinions on modern MotoGP technology, expressing concerns that the latest advancements in electronics and devices may be undermining the true essence of the sport. Stoner believes that while technology has a place in MotoGP, it should prioritize safety rather than serve as a means for riders to simply go faster.

Stoner’s Take on Modern MotoGP Tech: Safety First

Stoner remains resolute in his stance that MotoGP technology is “a bit lacking” in its approach to safety. He argues that many of the current advancements—particularly those related to electronics and data systems—are being used to improve performance and speed rather than protect riders on the track. Stoner, known for his purist approach to riding, asserts that racing should challenge riders’ raw skill and judgment, rather than be dictated by assistive tech.

In Stoner’s view, MotoGP’s current reliance on technology strays from the sport’s roots and detracts from the skill of the riders. “The technology should be there as a safeguard,” he explained, “not as a way to go faster.”

Reflecting on what he would do if he had the authority, Stoner emphasized that he would make substantial changes to the MotoGP rulebook to redirect the purpose of technology. He believes that removing certain electronic aids would not only make the races more exciting but also bring back the competitive spirit that depends on riders’ instincts and skills. Stoner would prioritize revising regulations around traction control, ride-by-wire systems, and other performance-enhancing devices that have become commonplace in recent years.

Stoner’s insights tap into a larger conversation within the MotoGP community about balancing technological advancements with preserving the sport’s core values.

By re-centering the sport on rider skill and safety, Stoner believes MotoGP could foster a racing environment that showcases the talents of riders, while ensuring their safety without an overreliance on speed-focused enhancements.

As a former champion who has seen the evolution of MotoGP firsthand, Stoner’s words resonate with fans and industry insiders who feel that racing should be a test of skill over machine. His vision for a more rider-centric MotoGP might just spark the debate needed to bring about a safer and more authentic experience on the world’s most challenging circuits.
