At the recent United States Grand Prix, an awkward moment unfolded between Williams’ Franco Colapinto and Sky F1’s Martin Brundle during the grid walk. As Brundle approached Colapinto to interview him, the Argentinean driver walked straight past, seemingly unaware of who Brundle was.
Reflecting on the incident, Colapinto explained his decision to pass by without stopping. “There isn’t much of a story,” he told reporters before the Mexico City Grand Prix. Colapinto noted that he’s still adjusting to the pre-race rituals in F1, such as the grid walk and the press attention that comes with it. With the help of Williams’ press officer, Connor Bean, he’s been focused on minimizing distractions before a race to stay fully in the zone.
Having joined Williams mid-season, Colapinto, who replaced Logan Sargeant at the Italian Grand Prix, has been concentrating on his driving and adapting to the high-pressure environment. “I’m focused on driving first,” he shared, emphasizing that his main goal is performing well on the track rather than engaging in on-grid interviews. He added that he was running late for the national anthem at the time and was deeply focused on the upcoming race.
Although Colapinto’s reaction led some to assume he didn’t recognize Brundle, the young driver made it clear that he respects Brundle’s legacy in F1. “Martin, of course, has been massive—a mega driver with a huge legacy,” he said, but added that it “wasn’t a great moment to speak on camera.”
Brundle, meanwhile, took the encounter in stride, acknowledging the lighthearted nature of the moment during his commentary. “Must go and introduce myself to Franco,” he quipped, adding that Colapinto looked at him as if he was “trying to mug him or something.” Shortly after, Brundle moved on to interview celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, who was more eager to chat, which provided a light-hearted end to the encounter.
The incident highlights Colapinto’s intense focus on his new F1 responsibilities and his commitment to establishing himself in the sport, even as he navigates the growing media attention around him.
