I Dream of Being World Champion in All Three Disciplines’: Mathieu van der Poel Q&A

Mathieu van der Poel. The name conjures images of breathtaking speed, unparalleled versatility, and an almost mythical dominance across the cycling world. He’s a rider who, seemingly effortlessly, conquers the cobbled classics, the technical mountain stages, and the demanding cross-country courses. But beneath the surface of his seemingly effortless brilliance lies a deep-seated passion, a relentless drive, and a unique perspective on the sport he embodies. In this extensive Q&A, we delve into the mind of the “MvdP,” exploring his ambitions, his approach to training, and his vision for the future of cycling.

**From Cross to Classics to Road: A Tripartite Pursuit**

**Q: Your career is a testament to your mastery across disciplines. What drives this ambition to excel in cross, road, and mountain biking?**

**A:** It’s a passion, a love for the different sensations each discipline offers. Cross is about pure grit, the battle against the elements and the crowd. The road races demand a different kind of focus, a strategic mind. And mountain biking is a unique blend of both, where you need to be sharp on the technical sections and strong on the climbs. To be good at one doesn’t guarantee success in the others. It’s a constant challenge, a constant learning process. I find that diversity keeps things interesting and keeps me motivated. I enjoy the different challenges and the different feelings each discipline brings.

**Q: How do you manage the immense physical and mental demands of such a demanding schedule?**

**A:** It’s a juggling act, to be honest. The key is meticulous planning and recovery. We have a fantastic team around me – coaches, nutritionists, physiotherapists – who understand my body and my needs. There’s a lot of listening to my body, understanding when to push and when to pull back. Rest is as important as training, and mental preparation is crucial. I need to be in the right frame of mind to perform at my peak in each discipline. It’s about finding that balance, that harmony between pushing my limits and respecting my limitations.

**Q: The pressure of being a global star must be immense. How do you handle that pressure?**

**A:** Pressure is inevitable, part of the game. I try to focus on the process, not the outcome. I can’t control everything, so I concentrate on what I can control: my training, my preparation, my race tactics. Surrounding myself with supportive people who understand the highs and lows is vital. My family, my team, they’re the bedrock upon which I build my composure. Learning to accept the results, good or bad, is also a fundamental part of the process.

**Q: You’ve spoken about your dream of winning World Championships in all three disciplines. What does that mean to you personally?**

**A:** It’s a personal challenge, a testament to my dedication and passion for these sports. It’s a recognition of the hard work, the sacrifices, and the commitment involved. More than that, it’s about the satisfaction of completing the journey, achieving something few have done. It’s about pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in cycling and inspiring others to pursue their dreams, no matter how ambitious.

**Q: What are the biggest challenges you face in training for such a diverse range of disciplines?**

**A:** Coordination is key. You need to find the right balance between training for specific disciplines and maintaining a level of fitness across all three. Training for cross-country mountain biking is different from training for a cobbled classic or a road race. Building endurance in one area affects another. It’s a delicate balancing act, requiring constant adaptation and adjustments to my training plan. It’s also about ensuring that I don’t over-train in one area and under-train in another. Finding that perfect balance is a constant battle.

**Q: Looking ahead, what are your goals for the future?**

**A:** Winning more World Championships is a significant goal. But more broadly, I want to continue pushing the limits of what’s possible. I want to be a role model, not just for young cyclists, but for people from all walks of life. I want to inspire them to pursue their dreams, no matter how challenging they might seem. Ultimately, I want to leave a legacy that extends beyond the cycling world.

**Q: What advice would you give to aspiring athletes who dream of excelling in multiple disciplines?**

**A:** Be passionate, be dedicated, and be patient. It’s a long and challenging journey. You need a solid support system around you. Don’t be afraid to experiment, to find what works best for you, to adapt your training and your approach. Most importantly, enjoy the journey. The process is just as important as the outcome.

Mathieu van der Poel’s story is one of relentless pursuit, unwavering dedication, and a profound appreciation for the beauty and complexity of cycling. His ambition to become a World Champion in all three disciplines is not merely a personal goal; it’s a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and a relentless desire to push the boundaries of what’s possible. His journey serves as an inspiration to athletes worldwide, a reminder that greatness is often found in the pursuit itself.
