More Rear Grip Was Key to KTM’s Growth: Insights from Brad Binder

In the highly competitive world of motorcycle racing, particularly in the MotoGP circuit, performance is measured in fractions of seconds. Teams continually seek advancements that can provide even the slightest edge over their rivals. One of the critical areas of focus is tire grip, specifically rear grip, which can significantly influence a motorcycle’s handling and overall performance on the track. For KTM, a brand that has transformed its presence in MotoGP, modifications to enhance rear grip have played an essential role in their growth. South African rider Brad Binder lends his insights into this transformative journey, emphasizing the importance of rear grip in KTM’s competitive strategy.

The Importance of Grip in MotoGP

In MotoGP, grip is paramount. The rear tire, in particular, is crucial for acceleration and stability during cornering. A motorcycle that struggles to maintain rear grip will face challenges that can cost invaluable time on the track. The balance between speed and handling is delicate and requires continual refinement of motorcycle designs, tires, and suspension setups.

For KTM, a manufacturer relatively new to the MotoGP arena, harnessing rear grip was necessary to compete against seasoned rivals such as Yamaha, Ducati, and Honda. Brad Binder, one of the standout riders for the KTM team, has firsthand experience of the changes implemented to improve this grip and enhance the overall performance of their machines.

    KTM’s Evolution in MotoGP

KTM joined MotoGP in 2017, and their journey so far has been one of rapid evolution and learning. Initially, the team faced challenges that hampered their performance, leading to a rethink of their strategy. According to Binder, the critical observation that many teams overlooked was the lack of back checks—an assessment of available grip when accelerating out of corners.

“Everyone was focusing on the front end of the bike, but no one ever did a back check,” Binder recalled. The notion that increased rear grip could dramatically influence lap times was an insight that might have seemed simplistic, yet for KTM, it became a turning point.

    Engineering Innovations: Enhancing Rear Grip

In response to Binder’s insights, KTM’s engineering team turned their attention to the bike’s chassis and suspension. They implemented changes that were focused on weight distribution and frame geometry, significantly impacting rear traction.

    1. **Chassis Redesign**: By adjusting the rigidity of the chassis and shifting the weight distribution towards the rear, KTM was able to allow riders to unleash more horsepower without the rear tire losing grip. The new designs embraced changes that suited the various circuits across the globe, adapting to a range of track surfaces and conditions.

    2. **Suspension Tuning**: Custom tuning of the suspension setup to better absorb track imperfections also contributed to improved rear grip. A more compliant rear suspension allows for better contact with the asphalt, enhancing traction during acceleration and while entering corners.

    3. **Tire Partnership**: Collaborating closely with tire manufacturers, KTM has facilitated the development of compounds that maximize grip, particularly important on tracks that demand high performance from the rear tire.

    The Impact on Performance

The results of these efforts became evident on the racetrack. Binder, who achieved KTM’s first MotoGP victory in 2020, has often spoken about how the improvements in rear grip enabled him to push harder and compete with the best. The enhanced stability has given riders the confidence to corner aggressively and maintain speed, ultimately leading to better race outcomes and improved standings in the championship.

Moreover, Binder acknowledged that these adjustments have made KTM more competitive in various track conditions. “On some circuits where we previously struggled, we began to see a marked improvement,” he noted. This adaptability has made KTM not just a participant in the MotoGP but a contender capable of winning races and challenging for podium finishes.

Looking Forward: The Next Steps for KTM

As MotoGP continues to evolve, the challenge for KTM—and indeed all manufacturers—will be to maintain this momentum in performance enhancement. Grip will remain a central theme as teams develop bikes capable of meeting the increasing demands of this sport. With rising star riders like Binder pushing the envelope, it becomes crucial for KTM to harness continuous feedback and integrate cutting-edge technology into their racing programs.

The future may also see deeper collaborations with tire manufacturers and investments in data analytics. The ability to analyze performance data in real time and respond with precise adjustments can profoundly impact outcomes on race day.

Brad Binder’s reflections on the significance of rear grip serve as a reminder of how critical subtle nuances in motorcycle engineering can be to success in MotoGP. Since entering the championship, KTM has made impressive strides, with enhanced rear grip being a pivotal aspect of their growth. As they continue to develop their bikes and strategies, it will be fascinating to witness how they leverage these insights to stay at the forefront of the competition and contribute to the ever-evolving narrative of motorcycle racing excellence.
