Ducati Boss Gigi Dall’Igna Explains Why Bagnaia Won’t Get a New Chassis: ‘We Want a Fair Fight’

In the high-stakes world of MotoGP, where every millisecond counts, teams are constantly pushing the boundaries of technology to gain a competitive edge. Ducati, long renowned for its innovation and engineering brilliance, has been at the forefront of this arms race. However, in a surprising move, Ducati’s General Manager, Gigi Dall’Igna, has revealed that he will not provide reigning MotoGP World Champion Francesco Bagnaia with a new chassis for the final stages of the season.

The decision has raised eyebrows in the paddock and among fans, as Bagnaia battles for the championship against teammate and fierce rival Jorge Martín. Dall’Igna’s reasoning, however, sheds light on Ducati’s broader philosophy and commitment to fairness—a principle that has helped shape its current dominance in MotoGP.

    —

The 2024 MotoGP season has been nothing short of spectacular for Ducati. With the GP24 hailed as the most advanced motorcycle on the grid, the Italian manufacturer has consistently outpaced its rivals. Ducati riders have claimed multiple victories, and the championship battle has narrowed down to a thrilling intra-team showdown between Bagnaia and Martín.

Despite their shared machinery, Bagnaia and Martín have taken different paths to success. Bagnaia, the 2022 and 2023 MotoGP champion, has relied on his smooth, calculated riding style, while Martín has dazzled with his aggressive, high-risk approach. The two riders have pushed each other to the limit, creating one of the most exciting title battles in recent memory.

Amid this intense rivalry, the decision to withhold a new chassis for Bagnaia has sparked debate. Some see it as a bold move to ensure a level playing field, while others question whether Ducati is inadvertently handicapping its star rider.

    —

In an exclusive interview, Gigi Dall’Igna explained the rationale behind his decision. “At Ducati, we value competition,” he said. “We want our riders to win on merit, not because they had access to equipment that their teammate didn’t. It’s important that both Francesco and Jorge fight under the same conditions.”

Dall’Igna emphasized that the decision wasn’t about favoritism or a lack of trust in Bagnaia. “Francesco is an incredible rider. He’s proven himself time and time again. But giving him a new chassis at this stage of the season would upset the balance within the team. It’s not just about technology—it’s about fairness.”

The Ducati boss also pointed out that introducing a new chassis mid-season comes with risks. Testing and development require time, and rushing such a critical component could lead to unforeseen issues. “The current chassis is already exceptional,” Dall’Igna said. “Changing it now could disrupt the harmony Francesco has with the bike.”

    —

Dall’Igna’s commitment to fairness is rooted in Ducati’s broader approach to racing. Unlike some manufacturers that prioritize a single rider, Ducati has consistently supported multiple contenders, fostering healthy competition within its team.

This philosophy has paid dividends, with Ducati claiming multiple Constructors’ Championships and establishing itself as the dominant force in MotoGP. By ensuring equal treatment for all its riders, Ducati has cultivated an environment where talent and effort are the deciding factors.

“Racing is about the rider as much as the machine,” Dall’Igna explained. “We provide the best possible tools, but it’s up to the riders to make the difference on track. That’s what makes MotoGP so exciting.”

    —

Francesco Bagnaia has remained diplomatic about the decision, though it’s clear he understands the stakes. “I trust the team,” he said in a recent press conference. “They’ve given me a fantastic bike, and I’m confident in what we have. My focus is on racing, not on whether I get new parts or not.”

Bagnaia’s maturity and professionalism have been key to his success. The Italian rider knows that the championship will be decided on track, not in the garage. “At the end of the day, it’s about what you do in the race. Jorge is a great competitor, and I’m ready for the fight.”

    —

Jorge Martín, meanwhile, welcomed Dall’Igna’s decision, seeing it as a reaffirmation of Ducati’s commitment to equal treatment. “This is why I love being part of this team,” Martín said. “They believe in fairness, and they give both riders the chance to prove themselves. That’s all you can ask for as a competitor.”

Martín, who has been in scintillating form this season, acknowledged that the battle with Bagnaia has brought out the best in him. “Racing against Pecco is a challenge, but it’s also an honor. He’s one of the best riders in the world, and I’m pushing myself to match him.”

    —

Ducati’s decision to withhold a new chassis comes with inherent risks. In a championship as closely contested as this one, even the smallest advantage can be decisive. Critics argue that Ducati should do everything in its power to support Bagnaia, given his proven track record and status as the reigning champion.

However, Dall’Igna remains confident in his strategy. “We believe in our riders and in the bike we’ve built. The GP24 has proven itself capable of winning races and championships. There’s no need to introduce unnecessary variables at this stage.”

By sticking to its principles, Ducati has reinforced its reputation as a team that values integrity and competition. While this approach may not guarantee immediate results, it builds trust and loyalty among its riders and fans.

    —

As the season enters its final stages, the title fight between Bagnaia and Martín is poised to deliver more drama and excitement. Both riders are at the peak of their powers, and with equal equipment, the outcome will come down to their skills, strategies, and nerves.

For Gigi Dall’Igna, the hope is that Ducati’s approach will showcase the true essence of MotoGP. “This sport is about pushing limits—of the bike, the rider, and the team. By ensuring a fair fight, we’re honoring the spirit of competition. May the best man win.”

Regardless of who emerges victorious, Ducati’s dominance in 2024 is a testament to its innovation, teamwork, and commitment to excellence. The GP24 may be the most advanced motorcycle on the grid, but it’s the human element—the riders, engineers, and decision-makers—that ultimately defines its legacy.

In a sport where technology often takes center stage, Dall’Igna’s philosophy serves as a reminder that fairness and sportsmanship remain at the heart of MotoGP. And as Bagnaia and Martín prepare for their final showdown, fans can rest assured that they are witnessing a battle fought on equal terms—exactly as it should be.
