“I Agree with Mick Doohan—They Race Too Desperate”: Brad Binder Criticizes Francesco Bagnaia and Jorge Martin’s Racing Style

MotoGP has always been a thrilling spectacle of speed, skill, and, at times, aggression. Recently, South African rider Brad Binder added his voice to a growing concern in the MotoGP paddock, criticizing the racing styles of Francesco Bagnaia and Jorge Martin. Binder, known for his straightforward approach, expressed frustration over what he describes as “desperate” racing tactics, a sentiment famously echoed by racing legend Mick Doohan.

Here’s an in-depth look at Binder’s perspective on why Bagnaia and Martin’s racing style could be problematic for the sport.

    1. Aggressive Tactics Over Technique

Binder didn’t hold back when he stated that Bagnaia and Martin’s riding styles sometimes verge on desperation. “I agree with Mick Doohan—they race too desperate,” Binder remarked. According to him, both Bagnaia and Martin are riding on the edge, prioritizing aggressive maneuvers over refined technique. Binder worries this approach could overshadow the high-level skill MotoGP is known for, as riders seem more focused on risky moves than on maintaining consistent lap times and technical precision.

    2. Risking Safety for the Sake of Competition

For Binder, the issue isn’t just about style—it’s also a matter of safety. MotoGP is inherently dangerous, with riders hitting speeds of over 200 mph on circuits with sharp turns and limited room for error. Binder argued that Bagnaia and Martin’s high-risk moves could not only jeopardize their own safety but also endanger other riders on the track. He called for a more measured approach, emphasizing that the thrill of MotoGP should not come at the expense of riders’ well-being.

    3. Setting a Precedent for Young Riders

Binder also voiced his concerns about the message this desperate racing style might be sending to younger riders. With Bagnaia and Martin at the top of their game, younger riders are looking up to them as role models, taking notes on their aggressive, do-or-die moves. Binder fears that this could lead to a generation of racers more focused on audacious overtakes than refining the technical mastery required to be successful—and safe—at the highest level.

    4. Championing Consistency Over Flashy Overtakes

Binder’s racing philosophy has always emphasized consistency over flashiness. He believes that while bold overtakes may grab headlines, it’s the ability to maintain steady, strategic performances that ultimately wins championships. Binder points to Mick Doohan’s legacy—a racer renowned for his calculated and consistent approach—as a style to aspire to. “Doohan set the standard for skillful, disciplined racing, and that’s what we need more of in MotoGP,” Binder stated. By highlighting the five-time champion’s influence, Binder is calling for a return to the roots of MotoGP’s philosophy.

    5. The Cost of Overconfidence in Racing

According to Binder, both Bagnaia and Martin may be letting overconfidence influence their racing style. With Bagnaia leading Ducati’s charge and Martin showing impressive form, both riders may feel invincible—a mentality that can sometimes lead to reckless decision-making on the track. Binder believes that respecting the limits of the track and the bikes is crucial to a successful, long-lasting career.

The Verdict: Can MotoGP Find a Balance?
Brad Binder’s comments add to the ongoing debate on racing styles in MotoGP. With Mick Doohan’s endorsement of a more measured approach, Binder’s critique of Bagnaia and Martin’s desperate moves is resonating with fans and experts alike. While excitement and risk are inherent to the sport, Binder advocates for a style that values safety, consistency, and respect for fellow racers on the track.

MotoGP will need to consider Binder’s perspective, especially as more voices join the call for a safer, more strategic approach to racing. After all, for Binder, and riders like him, the sport’s essence lies not just in winning, but in racing with integrity and respect for the craft.
