‘Immediately stop this’: Student conduct plagues Iowa State football games

**Ames, Iowa** — Saturdays at Jack Trice Stadium have long been a hallmark of camaraderie and school spirit for Iowa State students and fans. For JaMarcus Bradley-Norman, now in his second year at the university, game days once meant joining thousands of fellow Cyclone supporters in a safe, celebratory environment. But in recent seasons, Bradley-Norman has been put off by the shifting atmosphere, which he says has become increasingly tainted by disruptive behavior and the presence of contraband within the student section.

As Iowa State’s football team, under coach Matt Campbell, continues to shine on the field, troubling trends have emerged in the stands. Incidents of unruly conduct, often linked to underage drinking, have marred the game-day experience for many. The issue came to a head after the recent Oct. 19 home game against UCF, where Iowa State Athletic Director Jamie Pollard issued a statement addressing the escalation in unacceptable fan behavior. Pollard noted that bottles and other objects were hurled from the student section, hitting fellow fans, including young children.

“Our student section has been an essential part of the team’s energy, helping fuel touchdowns and big plays,” Pollard’s statement read. “Unfortunately, recent actions by some students, such as throwing water bottles and other items, have led to injuries among our own fans. We must put a stop to this behavior immediately, or someone will eventually be seriously hurt.”

Statistics from the Iowa State University Police Department (ISUPD) paint a concerning picture. During the Oct. 19 game, eight people were arrested for public intoxication, 16 citations were issued for underage alcohol possession, and 24 individuals were ejected. In contrast, the first three home games of the season saw only six total arrests for public intoxication. While Pollard’s statement was a step toward addressing these issues, the athletic department has refrained from making further comments on the topic, despite ongoing complaints from students.

Bradley-Norman isn’t alone in his concerns. Many students have reported being struck by projectiles or witnessing behavior driven by excessive alcohol consumption. While alcohol is technically prohibited for underage fans, the sheer volume of attendees under the age of 21 at games raises concerns for university officials and ISUPD.

The call for change is growing among the student body. Some have proposed introducing regulated alcohol sales inside the stadium as a potential solution, arguing that it would allow authorities to monitor alcohol consumption more effectively. Freshman Kalob Kroeger, in support of this idea, commented, “Yes, selling alcohol could make the atmosphere more rowdy, but it would also allow for better control over who drinks and how much they drink.”

Others, like Bradley-Norman, believe in the need for stricter security protocols to curb illegal activities. Despite student-led proposals in 2021 and 2022 to enhance security measures around the stadium, the university has not acted on these suggestions.

“There’s a clear need for a way to manage alcohol at games,” Bradley-Norman shared. “It’s not about taking away the fun—it’s about maintaining a safe environment. Right now, there’s no system in place to handle it effectively, and it’s leading to behavior that doesn’t belong here.”

With tensions high, Iowa State faces the challenge of balancing school spirit and game-day traditions with safety and respect for all fans in attendance. As the season progresses, the university will likely need to address the growing demand for reform to preserve the integrity of the game-day experience at Jack Trice Stadium.
