Glenn Hughes Reflects on Deep Purple Legacy and Excitement for Upcoming Australian Tour

Glenn Hughes, the legendary bassist and vocalist who helped shape the sound of Deep Purple in the 1970s, is gearing up for a major tour in Australia, where he will revisit some of the band’s classic hits while also celebrating his storied career in rock and roll. Known as “The Voice of Rock,” Hughes has enjoyed a decades-long career, from his time with Deep Purple to his solo projects and collaborations with other rock legends. In a candid interview ahead of the tour, Hughes opened up about his time with Deep Purple, his musical journey, and what fans can expect when he brings his high-energy performances Down Under.

    Deep Purple Legacy That Endures

Glenn Hughes joined Deep Purple in 1973, during a pivotal moment in the band’s career. He replaced Roger Glover as bassist and, alongside David Coverdale, formed the new vocal powerhouse of the band. Hughes’ addition marked a significant shift in Deep Purple’s sound, blending hard rock with funk and soul elements, which helped the band explore new musical territories.

Reflecting on his time with the band, Hughes noted how Deep Purple’s musical experimentation defined the era. “When I joined Deep Purple, we were pushing boundaries. We weren’t just a straight rock band; we were fusing different genres. We wanted to explore everything that excited us musically,” he explained.

Hughes contributed to three albums with Deep Purple: *Burn* (1974), *Stormbringer* (1974), and *Come Taste the Band* (1975). These albums marked a departure from the band’s earlier work, showcasing Hughes’ love for funk and soul. Tracks like “Burn” and “Stormbringer” became staples of Deep Purple’s catalog and showcased the raw energy of Hughes’ bass playing and vocal prowess.

Despite some internal tensions during his time with the band, Hughes looks back on those years with immense pride. “Deep Purple was my family, and those albums were a reflection of where we were as musicians and as people at the time. There were highs and lows, but I wouldn’t change a thing,” he said.

The Evolution of Glenn Hughes’ Career

After Deep Purple disbanded in 1976, Hughes embarked on a solo career that allowed him to continue experimenting with different musical styles. Over the years, he has worked with a wide range of artists and bands, from Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi to Gary Moore and Joe Bonamassa, proving his versatility and enduring influence in the rock world.

Hughes’ post-Deep Purple career has been marked by both personal and professional highs and lows. His battle with addiction during the 1980s is well documented, but his recovery and comeback in the 1990s were nothing short of inspirational. Hughes emerged stronger than ever, focusing on his music and reinventing himself as a dynamic solo artist while maintaining his status as one of the most respected figures in the rock community.

“I’ve had my share of struggles, but music has always been my lifeline,” Hughes said. “There’s nothing more powerful than performing live and connecting with fans who’ve been on this journey with me. It’s what keeps me going.”

Hughes’ solo work often reflects his love for soul and funk, with albums like *Feel* (1995) and *Resonate* (2016) highlighting his musical versatility. He’s never been content to stay within the confines of any one genre, constantly pushing himself creatively. His vocal range and emotive delivery have only improved with time, earning him the nickname “The Voice of Rock” among his peers and fans alike.

Bringing the Deep Purple Classics to Life on Tour

For his upcoming Australian tour, Hughes will be focusing on the iconic songs he recorded with Deep Purple, bringing their timeless music back to life for audiences. Fans can expect to hear classics like “Burn,” “Mistreated,” “You Fool No One,” and “Stormbringer,” among others. Hughes’ performances are known for their intensity, and his ability to still hit the high notes and deliver gut-wrenching performances is a testament to his vocal longevity.

“This tour is all about celebrating the music I made with Deep Purple,” Hughes said. “The songs from those albums have stood the test of time, and I’m excited to share them with fans who have been waiting to hear them live.”

When asked what fans can expect from his upcoming shows, Hughes shared his excitement for revisiting the classic material. “It’s going to be an incredible experience. The energy of these songs is still there, and I’ve been working with an amazing band to make sure we bring that energy to the stage. I want the fans to feel like they’re right back in the 1970s, hearing these songs for the first time.”

Hughes’ dedication to his craft has always been evident in his live performances. He approaches every show with the same passion and intensity that have defined his career for decades. Despite being in his 70s, Hughes shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, he says he’s more energized than ever. “I feel great, I’m in good health, and I’m ready to give the fans a show they’ll never forget. I’m so grateful that I’m still able to do this after all these years.”

The Importance of Connecting with Fans

One of the most remarkable aspects of Glenn Hughes’ career is the strong bond he has with his fans. Hughes credits his fans for keeping him going through the ups and downs of his life and career. “The fans have been with me through everything—through the highs, the lows, the comebacks, and the new projects. I don’t take that for granted.”

Hughes is known for his humility and genuine connection with his audience. Whether he’s playing in front of thousands at a festival or in a more intimate venue, Hughes always takes time to acknowledge the fans who have supported him. “For me, it’s always been about the music and the connection with people. When I’m on stage, I can feel that energy from the crowd, and it’s like nothing else. That’s what makes performing so special.”

He also emphasized that the Australian tour will be a chance for him to meet fans who have been following his career for decades, as well as a new generation of rock fans. “Australia has always been a special place for me, and the fans there are some of the best in the world. I’m looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones. It’s going to be a celebration of the music we all love.”

Looking Ahead: The Future of Glenn Hughes

As Hughes prepares to embark on this tour, he remains focused on the future and continues to explore new musical horizons. While the Deep Purple legacy is a significant part of his story, Hughes is always looking forward, eager to continue creating new music and collaborating with other artists. His commitment to his craft and his undying passion for rock music make it clear that, even after more than 50 years in the business, Glenn Hughes is still as relevant as ever.

When asked what’s next after the tour, Hughes hinted at some exciting projects in the works. “I’m always working on new music. There are some collaborations in the pipeline, and I’m looking forward to sharing that with everyone when the time is right. I never stop creating. That’s the beauty of music—it’s a lifelong journey.”

Hughes’ resilience and dedication to his art have made him a true icon in the world of rock music. From his days in Deep Purple to his ongoing solo career, Hughes has always stayed true to his passion for music. His upcoming Australian tour is not just a celebration of his past, but a reminder that Glenn Hughes is still pushing boundaries and making an impact in the world of rock.

As fans prepare to experience the powerful performances that Hughes is known for, it’s clear that this tour will be one for the ages—a tribute to the music that has defined generations and a celebration of an artist whose legacy continues to grow.

In closing, Hughes offered a message to his fans: “Thank you for being on this journey with me. I can’t wait to see you all in Australia, and let’s make this tour something truly special. The music lives on, and I’m ready to give it everything I’ve got.”
