Tadej Pogačar, the Slovenian cycling sensation, has had a whirlwind season in 2024, marked by both triumphs and challenges. As the year winds down, his focus has sharpened on two key objectives: the UCI World Championships in Zurich and the Il Lombardia, two races that hold immense significance in his calendar. For the remainder of 2024, Pogačar’s strategy is finely tuned to maximize his chances of success at both events, choosing to prioritize quality over quantity by skipping the Vuelta a España to conserve his energy.

Pogačar’s 2024 season has been one of intensity and high expectations. Following a strong performance at the Tour de France, where he finished second to Jonas Vingegaard, the Slovenian took a well-deserved break. The physical and mental toll of a season that had seen him compete at the highest level in multiple events required him to step back briefly to recharge. Pogačar’s decision to take this rest was not just a matter of recovery but also a part of his meticulous planning as he eyed the final crucial races of the year.

This strategic rest period allowed him to recuperate and focus fully on the remaining goals. It was a decision that aligned with his long-term vision of maintaining peak form at the most important moments. For Pogačar, rest is as crucial as training, and this period provided him with the chance to reflect on his achievements while preparing his body and mind for the challenges ahead.

As part of his preparation for the World Championships, Pogačar will compete in two World Tour races in Canada: the Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec and the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal. These races, held in mid-September, offer Pogačar the ideal platform to fine-tune his form ahead of the World Championships in Zurich. The Canadian events are known for their challenging courses, which will allow Pogačar to test his legs against some of the world’s best cyclists, all while honing his tactical approach for the major races to come.

The decision to race in Canada, rather than focusing on longer stage races such as the Vuelta, speaks to Pogačar’s specific goals. The one-day format of the Canadian races is more reflective of the demands he will face in Zurich, where the World Championships will similarly test his ability to perform at peak intensity over a single, crucial day.

For many top riders, the Vuelta a España offers a final grand tour to showcase their talents and rack up significant results. However, Pogačar’s decision to skip this race speaks volumes about his priorities for the remainder of the season. While the Vuelta is an important event, Pogačar’s focus on the World Championships and Il Lombardia reflects his determination to make the most of these specific objectives. His team, UAE Team Emirates, fully supports this decision, knowing that Pogačar’s ambitions are global rather than just limited to grand tours.

Skipping the Vuelta allows Pogačar to avoid the fatigue that comes with a three-week grand tour, instead concentrating his efforts on shorter, more targeted races. This selective approach is designed to ensure that he arrives at the World Championships fresh, fully recovered, and at his peak. The terrain in Zurich is expected to suit riders like Pogačar, who thrive on punchy climbs and technical courses. His explosiveness and versatility will be key assets as he competes against a world-class field for the coveted rainbow jersey.

The UCI World Championships in Zurich is undoubtedly the highlight of Pogačar’s autumn campaign. For Pogačar, winning the rainbow jersey would not only be a significant personal achievement but also a statement of his status as one of the sport’s true all-rounders. The course in Zurich is expected to be challenging, with a series of sharp climbs and technical descents that play to Pogačar’s strengths. Known for his ability to excel in various terrains, from the high mountains to the rolling hills, Pogačar will be one of the favorites in Zurich.

The prestige of the World Championships is unmatched, and wearing the rainbow jersey is a dream for every cyclist. For Pogačar, this is a rare opportunity to cap an already remarkable season with a victory that would further cement his legacy in the sport. His preparation, which includes the races in Canada, is designed to ensure that he arrives in Zurich in top form. His team, UAE Team Emirates, will also provide strong support, ensuring that Pogačar has every advantage as he vies for the title.

Following the World Championships, Pogačar’s attention will turn to Il Lombardia, the final Monument of the cycling season and a race he has won twice before, in 2021 and 2022. Known as the “Race of the Falling Leaves,” Il Lombardia is one of the most prestigious one-day races on the calendar and is particularly beloved by Pogačar. The race, held in the scenic Italian countryside, is characterized by its long, punishing climbs, and it demands not only physical strength but also tactical intelligence.

Il Lombardia offers Pogačar the chance to end his season on a high note. Having already won the race twice, he will undoubtedly be one of the favorites again. The course’s difficulty, combined with the unpredictable autumn weather, makes Il Lombardia one of the most challenging races of the year. For Pogačar, a victory in Il Lombardia would be the perfect way to conclude what has been a demanding but successful season.

Pogačar’s approach to the latter part of the 2024 season reflects his maturity as a rider and his ability to focus on key objectives. By taking a well-timed rest, preparing through carefully selected races, and choosing to bypass the Vuelta a España, Pogačar has laid out a clear path to success. The World Championships and Il Lombardia represent the two pillars of his autumn campaign, and both are within his reach if his preparation pays off.

In a sport where overloading the calendar can often lead to burnout or diminished performances, Pogačar’s decision to concentrate on fewer, more significant races is a testament to his strategic thinking. As he enters the final months of the season, the cycling world will be watching closely to see if Pogačar can add the rainbow jersey and another Monument victory to his already impressive palmarès. Whatever the outcome, his methodical preparation and focus on the biggest prizes have once again confirmed Tadej Pogačar as one of the most intelligent and ambitious riders in the peloton.
