This week, the Pittsburgh Steelers shocked their fan base by moving wide receiver Diontae Johnson, a key component of the offence for the previous five seasons and a 2019 third-round pick, to the Carolina Panthers in an extremely dubious deal. Fortunately, Omar Khan hasn’t made many changes of that like in his brief tenure as general manager of the Steelers. However, it has left supporters curious about who precisely will be receiving throws from Russell Wilson this season.
The Steelers’ intention to go “all-in” on the 2024 campaign has been expressed in the majority of their free agency decisions, so it stands to reason that they won’t be satisfied with a depth chart that virtually starts and ends with third-year wide receiver George Pickens.
Assume the Steelers are prepared to invest some cash in the offence and are looking to spice things up a bit in the wide receiver market after dealing Diontae Johnson. Since the 2021 season, Pittsburgh has spent offensively, ranking in the bottom eight. They were even deemed “dead last” in 2022 and 2024 (at least, that’s what we know thus far this free agency session).
