According to the teen’s mother, she checked her Snapchat after the murder and even replied to messages from friends who were crying during her vigil.
After reportedly stabbing Edna High School cheerleader Lizbeth Medina, 16, on December 5, Rafael Govea Romero, 23, was charged with capital murder and placed under detention by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Earlier this month, the teen’s mother went looking for her and discovered her dead in the bathtub.
Romero is also suspected of taking Medina’s phone following her death, according to Fox News, which cited Edna police.
The day the adolescent was killed, her boyfriend was able to locate her phone over half a mile from her apartment. The victim’s cousin found out the next day that one of her Snapchat messages had been read.
Four days after the murder, Medina’s number was also texted to her friend and lover.
In order for people to realize just how sick this man is, on Saturday, the day of my daughter’s vigil, which was magical in my opinion because I know she was present and that everyone there felt her presence, one of her friends texted my daughter’s phone a few minutes after the vigil to simply say something lovely to her. Jacqueline Medina, the girl’s mother, told Fox News Digital, “And this person responded.”
Following reports from friends and family about the strange phone behavior, authorities tracked down Romero in Schulenburg, Texas, where he was detained, using the phone’s geolocation data.
